5:30 PM: SOCIAL 6:00 PM: PRESENTATION 7:15 DINNER

The topic of Middle East Realignment—chosen before October 7, 2023—refers to how,  over recent, years a confident and prosperous Israel has slowly been integrated into the  fabric of Middle Eastern affairs. This integration was especially marked by the Abraham  Accords, negotiated by the Trump administration and embraced by the incoming Biden  administration, that sought to include Saudi Arabia in full diplomatic and commercial  relations with Israel. These efforts, however, were being made without a clear solution  to the interests of the Palestinian people under Israeli occupation in the West Bank  and Gaza. Not surprisingly, this effort to stabilize the region came to a dramatic halt  on October 7, when Hamas fighters attacked Israel and unleashed a war that has killed  more than 30,000 Palestinians and 1,200 Israelis. Gary’s presentation will  explore the state of the region today and the prospects for the future.

Gary is Professor Emeritus of political science and Latin American  Studies at the College of St. Benedict and St. John’s University,  and research associate and honorary professor at Nelson  Mandela University in South Africa. He is the author or  co-editor of close to 20 books and 100 academic articles on a  range of international subjects, with a primary focus on Latin  America. He has taught courses on international relations  for 50 years, and is a regular lecturer in the Great Decisions  program of Global Minnesota.
