Artist statement:
I’m a Minnesotan through and through. I grew up in Edina and started working on my art career when I got a giant box of 72 crayons for Christmas at age eight. I graduated from Winona State University, but I was also trained in classical painting and drawing through the Atelier system that was started in Minneapolis by Richard Lack. I have a studio in the Northrup King Building in north Minneapolis; the building has become a well-known destination for incredible art events like Art-aWhirl and Art Attack.
The work I’m sharing in this show started when I decided to step away from traditional still life and let my imagination dictate the compositions. I wanted to try to create a fresh, slightly humorous take on still life. Paintings started popping into my head fully formed while I was in a half-awake state. Dreaming of floating fruit and walking teapots sent me towards expressing the human condition through anthropomorphic vignettes. By the use of objects as opposed to figures, I’m taking out gender and cultural cues and hoping everyone can relate to the stories. I describe my work with the adjectives colorful, warm, joyful, positive, graphic, clean, modern, whimsical. My overall goal as a painter is that I’d like my paintings to make people feel good —to bring joy and fun.
