About the Event

Step into a musical time machine with Dame Maria (actual President of The Wodehouse Society!) and Sir Philip

(actual Member of the British Empire!), and travel back 100 years to the golden age of British song, presented in the

elegant “Downtown Abbey” environs of The Woman’s Club.

For the full experience, come early for England’s beloved Coronation Chicken (or Coronation Chickpeas), created

for QE2’s coronation in 1953; or just get into the Coronation mood with songs and stories about the people, places

and things Lady Mary and her guests would’ve celebrated:

*Elizabeth I & Sir Francis Drake;

*Devon, Somerset and the Empire;

*Glorious British folksong, stirring patriotic marches, and heartrending ballads about lost loves; and

*Fairies, very bad children, and stalkers.

The wildly varied list of composers includes Sullivan (minus Gilbert), Grainger, Elgar, & Stanford, plus Liza

Lehmann, Amy Woodforde-Finden, and Carrie Jacobs Bond— and more! You’ll depart with a burning interest in

finding The Lost Chord…and in a cloud of the pet fragrance of the 1920s, Shalimar (optional, but recommended).5:00 pm Doors open for drinks and dinner in the Ballroom. 7:30 pm Concert in the Lounge.

 If joining us for dinner, you will enjoy Chef Joatta's recreation of the historically famous Coronation Chicken, created for the foreign guests attending the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. Constance Spry, who had been commissioned to arrange flowers for the coronation, also created this new dish--a combination of cold, cooked chicken, herbs and spices, and a creamy mayonnaise based sauce.  The recipe has forever been known as Coronation Chicken.   Concert only :  $20 Members/ $25 Public.  Concert and dinner:  $45 Members/$50 Public
