Please join us for what will be a captivating and important evening on this somber day. After his timely and incredibly successful lecture on the Mideast earlier this year, Gary has put together a follow-up presentation designed, at our request, for the Woman’s Club.
Following the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1992, the US emerged as a sole superpower leading a unipolar world. President George HW Bush proclaimed a New World Order, to be marked by peace, prosperity, and liberal democracy. Thirty years later, we live in a very different world and the US, while still a major power with the world’s largest military, must navigate a multi-polar world and significant new challenges. China, whose economy is now on par with the US, is flexing its influence throughout the world as it seeks natural resources and markets for its goods. China is not alone, however, as a rising power. Members of the BRICS organization, which includes Brazil, Russia, India, and South Africa, are increasingly influential international players, and often have different interests and values than the US. US leadership in the world is also in question following disastrous wars in Iraq and Afghanistan that led significant portions of the US electorate, both Democrat and Republican, wanting more focus on domestic issues and less attention to foreign affairs.
As a marker of this, the two primary contenders for the US presidency in 2024 have markedly different views on the role of the US in the world. It’s certain to be a full house, so please reserve your space early. Members of the public are welcome and encouraged to attend the presentation at no cost. To serve dinner, we must have at least 10 reservations for dinner prior to the event. Coming in October Edmund Downie: China & the U.S.
