Tuesday Programs: Shapiro & Smith Dance
Guest Speaker: Joanie Smith
Club Member Joanie Smith and Shapiro & Smith Dance will present a behind-the-scenes look at their dance work, Notes From A Séance. This comic and mysterious work is inspired by the life of the Russian occultist Madame Blavatsky.
Shapiro & Smith Dance began in 1985 in New York City and toured the world from Morris, MN to Tashkent, Uzbekistan. They then moved to Minneapolis in 1995. Artistic Director and Choreographer Joanie Smith holds the Barbara Barker Endowed Chair in Dance and the John Black Johnston Distinguished Professorship at the University of Minnesota. With Club Members Sandra Smalley-Fleming, Jen Polzin, Erin Cragg and Leigh Frost, Smith has developed a program that brings dance and movement workshops to the Tubman Centers.
Smith has choreographed works for diverse companies including The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago and the PACT Dance Company of South Africa. Shapiro & Smith Dance has received continued funding from The National Endowment for the Arts, the Minnesota State Arts Board and The McKnight Foundation as well as generous support from individuals in the Twin Cities.
