Local Sustainable Food Takes Root: How our University researchers, sustainable farmers, entrepreneurial processors, and local distributors are building a vibrant regional food system. In this system, decisions are made with an eye to the soilís fertility, human health, fair wages for workers, and the animalís welfare. Its highest consideration is the future not the immediate impact on the bottom line. Local organic food is not a novelty. It is going to be increasingly important as energy prices begin to soar and unstable weather is the norm. The better we get to know our food, the more likely we are to understand the impact our local and national policies have on our farmers and producers and our kitchens. This presentation will cover the following topics: overview and history of our local food system, university research (especially into efficient and perennial crops), organic growers, co-operative initiatives, entrepreneurial and artisan producers, as well as notes on where our local, regional and national legislators stand on important food issues.

Beth Dooley has covered the local food scene in the Northern Heartland for 30 years: she writes for the Taste section of the Minneapolis-St. Paul Star Tribune, and appears regularly on KARE 11 (NBC) television and MPR Appetites with Tom Crann. Sheís writeen multiple books, and co-authored The Sioux Chefís Indigenous Kitchen with Sean Sherman, winner of the James Beard Award for Best American Cookbook. In addition to writing about local food in the Northern Heartland, Beth guides local food trips for Wilderness Inquiry via Taste of the Apostles.


The Tuesday Program is a Club tradition to educate, inspire and entertain our Members and guests. Coffee and tea are served at 10:30 am in the Lounge, followed by a Guest Speaker in the Ballroom at 11:00 am and lunch in the Dining Room at 12:00 pm. The cost for lunch is $18.00 plus tax and service charge ($23.28, inclusive of tax and service). Reservations are not necessary.
