Guest Speaker: Lynnette Sjoquist
In girl’s and women’s sports, the demarcation line for many milestones is often Title IX. Having none of the opportunities of Title IX in high school because she graduated in 1971, Lynnette Sjoquist still managed to carve out quite a career in sports.
She played basketball, softball and volleyball at a small two-year school before she, along with her twin sister, entered into the unlikely occupation of women’s professional basketball. The All American Red Heads were a Barnstorming cross country phenomenon from 1936 to 1986 and the Sjoquist twins, also known as the Minnesota Twins, were proud to be part of it in the mid 70’s. In 1978, the Women’s Pro Basketball League (WBL) was formed and she proudly made the roster of the Minnesota Fillies. When it was all said and done, Lynnette finished her career as a player, coach and public relations director.
In 2011 the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame (WBHOF) honored the Red Heads by declaring them Trailblazers of the Game and created a unique display in their honor in Knoxville. Not to be outdone, the Naismith BHOF inducted the All American Red Heads with the Class of 2012. Only the second team to be inducted—and the first women’s team to be inducted. In 2018, Lynnette was honored once again by the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame as a Trailblazer of the Game along with the other players from the WBL.
Her passion for basketball and all women’s sports has led her to becoming a basketball analyst for Gopher
Women’s Basketball radio broadcasts for the past 17 years. Always anxious to make a difference and help girls and young women accomplish their dreams—she is Lynnette Sjoquist.
