Tuesday Program: WATCH – Women at the Courthouse

Event Date: Tuesday, November 20, 2018
Event Time: 11:00 am

Guest Speakers: Susan Lenfestey, Nick Cichowicz

In 1991, Susan Lenfestey read a series of Star Tribune articles about Minnesota’s lenient sentencing policies in cases of sexual assault and domestic violence. In one article a victims’ advocate was quoted as saying, “I wish a group like MADD would come in here to see what’s going on. Nothing will change until that happens.”

With no background in the law and a lot of naïveté, Lenfestey started WATCH, a volunteer-based court monitoring and research organization that has played a significant role in how the courts respond to cases of violence against women and children. Lenfestey will talk about the early days of WATCH, and some of the changes that have taken place over the years. She will be joined by Nick Cichowicz, executive director of WATCH, who will give an update on WATCH’s current programs, including recent studies on the prosecution of sex trafficking cases in Hennepin and Ramsey counties.

The Tuesday Program is a Club tradition to educate, inspire and entertain our Members and guests. Coffee and tea are served at 10:30 am in the Lounge, followed by a Guest Speaker in the Ballroom at 11:00 am and lunch in the Dining Room at 12:00 pm.
